BRILLION - The Brillion Police Department is encouraging residents to drop off mail at the post office after a recent rash of cases of theft from mailboxes in the city.
“What they’re doing is if you have your [mail] flag up, they grab the mail. If there’s a check in there, then they’re changing the check and setting it up so they can cash it,” Brillion Police Chief Kirk Schend said.
Dropping the mail directly off at the post office would prevent that. The Brillion Post Office on Water Street has outdoor drop-off boxes and indoor services.
“That’s a good way to do it. The mail is being taken on the way out, not necessarily on the way in, so when they put the flags up that’s a cue to someone or someones to go check and see what’s in the mailbox, so if you eliminate that, you take away their ability to forge a check or change a check that’s in the mail. Then you don’t have to worry about it,” Schend said.
There have been numerous cases of the mailbox theft in Brillion in in the last three weeks.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Brillion Police Department at 920-756-2221.
