HILBERT – Kindness and honor will rule on Friday, February 1, when Hilbert High School hosts Cedar Grove-Belgium in a Big East Conference boys’ basketball game.
KINDNESS FIRST
Between the junior varsity game and the varsity game, there will be a special collection – a bucket brigade collection – to benefit the family of senior boys’ basketball player Justin Vaness. The family members lost their home and all of their personal possessions in a fire over the weekend at their home on County E in Stockbridge.
The bucket brigade is for financial assistance for the family – cash and gift cards are requested by the organizers. Donations may also be dropped off at the main school entrance before school on Friday.
WALL OF FAME
The Hilbert Wolves Athletic Boosters will also be inducting new honorees into the Wall of Fame at halftime of the varsity boys’ basketball game on Friday, This year’s inductees are Dorothy “Dot” (Bunnell) McMahan, Matt Ruhland and Dan Strauss.
Strauss was a highly successful track coach at Hilbert High School, where he also was a boys basketball and football assistant coach. He taught at Hilbert for 33 years.
Ruhland was the first Hilbert graduate to earn an athletic scholarship to an NCAA Division I college. He played football at the University of Iowa and won first team All-Big 10 Conference honors – and played four times in the Rose Bowl.
McMahan is a world class marathon runner who was the 2013 USA 25km marathon champion. She starred at a distance runner at the UW-Milwaukee, and is currently involved professionally in the Hanson-Brooks Distance Project.
