Obituary: George R Schroeder,

George R Schroeder, 96, of Hilbert, WI passed away quietly in Jesus’ arms on November 25, 2023 in Neenah.


George was born on his family farm in Chilton, Wisconsin to George and Martha (Hintz) Schroeder on October 11, 1927. He was a graduate of Chilton High School in 1946 and played tuba in the school band. He married Janice M Behnke on July 21, 1951 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Hilbert. George served in the Korean War in the US Army from 1951-1953. He was in the 89th Tank Battalion. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #33 for 77 years. George was a lifetime member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Hilbert where he was a member of the Men’s Club, shared his carpentry skills and did numerous jobs for the church, school and community. George was a career carpenter who worked as a finished/cabinet maker. He was a member of the Carpenters Local Union #955 for 66 years. George would often show and share many things he made or repaired. George made many beautiful things for his children and helped them with most projects inside their homes. George loved music, especially dancing to polkas and waltzes with his children. George was a puzzle master. He made many puzzles for family members as gifts. George also enjoyed playing cribbage with the grandchildren, making a fuss when he would win. George was a huge fan of the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Bucks. He never wanted to be bothered during a game. Dad also had a passion for gardening, which he shared with his children. He was a farmer at heart. Moreover, he loved the outdoors. A ride to the lake and fishing was one of his favorite things to do.

George is survived by his son George (Sue Bechlem) Schroeder III, daughters Jenine (Paul) Rosnow, Shirley (Jon) Joch, Betty (Clint) Olson and Janet (Lee) Fredericks; grandchildren, Nicole (Josh) Ludwig, Adam Schroeder, Stephanie Schroeder, Brenda Digman, Kevin (Amy) Alksnis, Ryan (Jessica) Peterson, Kyle, (Abigail) Peterson, Sarah (Tony) Penaz, Doug Olson, Jenna and Raine Fredericks. Furthermore, he is survived by great grandchildren, Adley and Ashton Ludwig, Mason Digman, Caleb Alksnis, Ayla and Archer Peterson, Otto and Theodore Peterson, Hunter, Carter and Noah Penaz, Carson, Everly and Adalee Olson, sister Laverne Muenster, sister-in-law Dorothy (Elliot) Maile, Caroline Behnke and numerous nieces and nephews.

George is preceded in death by his wife Janice, his parents, George and Martha Schroeder, mother and father-in-law George and Ruth Behnke, brothers and sister-in-law’s Delmar (Delores) Schroeder, Gerald (Darlene) Schroeder, sisters and brother-in-law’s Marcella (Edward) Federwitz, Verona (Lester) Plate, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Florence (Lloyd) Behnke, brother-in-law’s George Muenster and Ruben Behnke.

The family of George would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the many staff employees of Emerald Ridge and ProMedica Hospice (caretakers Amy & Karen) in Neenah for all of their wonderful care and compassion for our father. We also extend a genuine thank you to Dr. Venkata Sravani Udayagiri for her kindness and care for dad.

Funeral services for George will be held Sunday, December 3 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Hilbert, with Pastor Mark Peterson officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm with the funeral service to follow. There will be a fellowship gathering after the service in the church parish hall.
