Obituary: Robert “Bob” Alwin Nickel

Robert “Bob” Alwin Nickel, 88, Morrison, passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday morning, September 25, 2022.


He was born November 19, 1933 to the late Alwin and Alma (Kriehn) Nickel. Bob was united in marriage to Bette Mueller on September 14, 1957 in Forestville, WI. Bob and Bette recently celebrated 65 years together.

Bob was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Morrison, and attended grades 1 thru 8 at Zion Lutheran School. He graduated from De Pere High School, and then went on to attend and graduate from Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science in Milwaukee. Bob and Bette purchased the former Schwartz Funeral Home, Morrison, in 1965 and they operated Nickel Funeral Home until the establishment was sold in 2017 to Scott and Carrie Baeten.

In his younger years, Bob was quite the baseball player and bowler. He played baseball for a couple of different teams such as the Morrison Blue Sox and the American Legion Post of De Pere. He enjoyed a good game of Euchre and Sheepshead cards and was also an avid Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and Wisconsin Badgers fan. Bob was a past member of the Way-Morr Lions Club and an active member of Zion Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council and cemetery committee.

In his professional career besides running his own funeral home, Bob drove livery service for several funeral homes. Bob was a member of the Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association, Fox River Valley Funeral Directors Association, and was a licensed funeral director and embalmer in the state of Wisconsin for 67 years.

He is survived by his wife Bette; their children: Ellen Nickel, Jay (Sara) Nickel, Karen Nickel and Mark (Robin) Nickel. His grandchildren: Alexandra (Derrick) Lang, Kyle Nickel, Linus Nickel, Caitlin Kane, Dani (Stephen) Romano, as well as 5 great-grandchildren. Bob is further survived by his brother Richard (Eleanor) Nickel Sr.; sister Helen Nickel; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law Ernst and Inez Mueller; sisters: Lois Nickel, Dorothy Nickel, and Ruth Timm. Brothers-in-law Herbert Timm and Robert Mueller; sister-in-law Beverly Mueller and nephew David Timm.

Friends may call at Zion Lutheran Church 7395 Cty W, Morrison on Saturday, October 1, 2022, from 9:00AM until time of service at 11:00AM with Pastor Randy Ott officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Please go to www.nickelfh.com to leave online condolences to the family. Nickel Funeral Home, Morrison is assisting the family with arrangements.

At the request of the family, instead of flowers or plants, a memorial fund will be established in Bob’s name.
