TWO RIVERS - The Brillion boys' basketball team qualified for state by beating Freedom 39-38 in the sectional championship on Saturday night in Two Rivers.
The Lions fell behind 19-5 in the first half before they regrouped and outscored the Irish 34-19 the rest of the game.
With around a minute to play, Mason Behnke, in a crowd of players near the rim, tipped the ball into the basket after a missed shot to give the Lions a 39-38 lead.
Brillion held off final Irish scoring attempts, including when Caeden Holly drew a charging foul with 0.4 seconds left in the game.
It was a total team effort. Holly, Behnke, Parker Braun, Jeremy Lorenz and others made crucial plays for the Lions.
"I can't believe it. Watching teams in the past go to state, I just always dreamt of going to the Kohl Center and I just can't believe it's actually happening. I don't know what to say," Behnke said.
Brillion will play in the state tournament semifinal on Thursday in Madison, March 17, at the Kohl Center.
Detailed coverage of Brillion's postseason games will be available in the print edition of The Brillion News.
