WRIGHTSTOWN – It was like bumper cars this morning on I-41 between Wrightstown and the Freedom Road exit.

Lt. Kevin Pawlak of the Brown County Sheriff’s Department said the freeway was closed for over an hour after numerous crashes.

Southbound traffic was backed up for more than five miles.

“There were a series of eight crashes between County S and County U,” Pawlak said.

Seven involved southbound traffic, one involved traffic heading north.

The various crashes were investigated by the Hobart-Lawrence Police Department, Brown County Sheriff’s Department and Wisconsin State Patrol.

“There were no life threatening injuries and [only] three people required medical transport,” Pawlak said. “The interstate was closed for approximately one hour while the scenes were cleared.”

Fire departments from Lawrence, De Pere and Ashwaubenon send manpower and apparatus to the scene.

Pawlak said a Lawrence Fire Department truck was struck and sustained minor damage.  The causes of each crash remains under investigation.
